Women’s Jiyu Kumite Clinic
for all ranks
Taught by Greg Scott

A Jiyu Kumite (sparring) clinic will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, at the
Shotokan Ohshima Dojo. The clinic will be held after Ohshima sensei’s annual women’s practice. All ranks are invited. The practice will be from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The
cost for the clinic is $40.00 or $60 (for both) if you attend the Self Defense Clinic on the following day (Sunday). A light snack is included in this fee.
Women are invited to stay overnight at the dojo, if necessary.

The Jiyu Kumite clinic will cover strategies and training methods. As you
know, Jiyu Kumite is a fundamental part of our practice, and an important
part of many Dan tests. Jiyu Kumite is often overlooked until Dan test time
approaches. Jiyu Kumite represents an important aspect of many senior
practices and public events, including SKA’s Nisei Week Tournament. Many of SKA’s strongest members attribute a portion of their success to the study of Jiyu Kumite, and the necessary challenges provided by matches. Clearly, the benefits of Jiyu Kumite outweigh the risks of the occasional and mostly mild injuries.

Jiyu Kumite fosters the internal strength sought by many in SKA. Members of all levels benefit from the unique strategies required for this type of
kumite. Improved sparring skills naturally improve other aspects of
practice. Those with exceptional skill in Jiyu Kumite are often called upon
to represent SKA at major training events.
Dojo leaders are asked to motivate their women members to attend this clinic.
