Downtown Appleton Christmas Parade – Appleton Nov. 25, 2014 Welcome the holiday season at the Midwest’s largest nighttime parade. Last year more than 80,000 spectators came to see the decorated floats, dazzling lights and spirited bands. With over 250,000 lights, the light display will showcase the community’s tallest holiday tree, a glowing fountain and 60-foot caterpillar. Madison Ballet’s 10th Annual The Nutcracker – Madison Dec. 13-27, 2014 The Madison Ballet’s The Nutcracker has been a Christmas tradition in Madison for a decade. Watch as the Overture Center’s Overture Hall is transformed into the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. There is no better way to get into the spirit of the season than by following the adventures of Clara and her Nutcracker in Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Celebrate the new year by watching a 30-pound frozen carp drop from 100 feet in the air. At the stroke of midnight, spectators will watch in awe as “Lucky” takes a plunge to welcome in 2015. Beforehand, Lucky sits atop a throne, and folks can kiss the fish for good luck. Swimmers gather at Dave’s Who’s Inn to strip down and prepare for the swim, while spectators can warm up with music, a brat fry and refreshments throughout the day. 920-457-9491 The Big Chill – Racine Jan. 9-11, 2015 The stakes are high at this year’s Big Chill as the 25th Annual Wisconsin Snow Sculpting Championship is celebrated in downtown Racine. One of the state’s premier snow festivals, Racine’s Big Chill, brings together 16 two-man snow sculpting teams from around the state to compete to advance to the 2016 United States National Snow Sculpting Competition. The first weekend of the snowmobile derby features the Vintage World Championships. Three days chock full of classic machines from the 60s and 70s. Winter Festival – La Farge Jan. 10, 2015 The list of events at La Farge’s Winter Festival goes on and on and is sure to please every type of visitor. Bring the whole family to take part in fun winter activities like ice skating, sledding, skiing, archery, snow sculpture slide, ice cave hikes, birds of prey presentation, face painting, horse-drawn bobsled rides, snowshoe exhibit, Tri-State Malamute Club sled dog race, weight pull and mutt race. Whew! So many events, and that doesn’t even include the annual chili and bread contest, auction, dinner and barn dance or the Candlelight Hike/Ski & Winter Astronomy. 608-625-2960 www.kvr.state.wi.us/winterfest Jack Frost Fest – Spooner Jan. 10, 2015 Plan a visit to Spooner for the annual Jack Frost Fest, where an abundance of winter fun awaits. What kind of fun? Participate in a toilet seat toss or turkey bowling competition. Cast a line for the ice fishing contest and lace up for the pond hockey tournament. With indoor and outdoor adventures, a rib and chili contest and marshmallow roasting – there’s snow much fun to be had at Jack Frost Fest. 800-367-3306; www.spoonerchamber.org Bald Eagle Watching Days – Prairie du Sac Jan. 16-17, 2015 Keep an eye out for our country’s national bird while in Prairie du Sac for Bald Eagle Watching Days as you’re sure to see at least one flying overhead. Eagle watching can be found along the Wisconsin River from the hydroelectric dam through Prairie du Sac down to Sauk City.
