The built-in anti-siphon backflow device prevents potential contamination of household wa- ter supplies from fertilizers and other toxic chemicals which may enter the system. Check your local codes for the types of backflow protection required in your area. Electric models are simple to hook up to a timer for automatic watering.

Cut into your household service line and install a brass slip-type compression tee, after the meter. The cut can be done anywhere on the line, depending on the layout of your system and the location of your first manifold.

Installing the Manifold If you are installing a new valve manifold, keep in mind that the location should be easily accessible for maintenance. Locate the manifold where you are not likely to be sprayed by the sprinklers when turning the system on manually. On larger systems, separate manifolds may be required for the front and back yards.

.19 amps. Larger valve models have slightly higher requirements. All Rain Bird valves are designed to work with Rain Bird timers and other timers that have a power output sufficient to activate the valve. Your Rain Bird valve offers some simple fea- tures you should be familiar with.
  • Page 9 Troubleshooting How the Valve Works It is easier to troubleshoot valves if you know a little about how the valve works. When an electrical impulse is transmitted to the solenoid (black cylinder with wires), an elec- tromagnetic field causes a small metal plunger in the solenoid to move upward. When the plunger moves upward, a small hole (port) in the valve is uncovered.

The worst thing that can be done to an impact style sprinkler is to apply a foreign lubricant. This includes oil, WD-40, silicone, Teflon, pipe dope, etc.

What is the main cause of solenoid failure? ›

Wear and Tear: Over time, the constant movement of the solenoid components can lead to wear and tear, causing them to malfunction. Electrical Issues: Solenoids rely on electrical signals to function. Any disruption in the electrical system, such as a short circuit or damaged wiring, can lead to solenoid failure.

Can I use WD-40 on sprinkler heads? ›

Sprinklers with a head comprising a spray management mechanism (with movable rods, pre-set sector jet adjustments, pulse stop, etc.) can be further lubricated with WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant. This will help to prevent the sprinklers jamming.

Do sprinkler heads need to be lubricated? ›

How far can rain bird sprinkler spray? ›

8' – 24' Spray distance.

How do I know if my water valve solenoid is bad? ›

Signs that Your Sprinkler Valve Solenoid is Bad

Water leaks: High pressure from a broken solenoid can put a lot of stress on your sprinkler system and burst small or large leaks throughout it. Low water pressure: Low water pressure can be just as much of a problem.

How long do sprinkler solenoids last? ›

Longevity of Sprinkler Valves

As for its individual parts, excellent quality components will last about 15 years. On the other hand, low-quality parts will only be good for three to four years.

What is the first thing to check if a solenoid valve fails to open? ›

The first thing you should be looking for is any blockages caused by sand or rocks. Removing any debris within your solenoid valve will usually fix the issue. If there is no debris, you should be looking for any damage like rupturing, melted plastic or burnt out coils or electronics.
